The Power of Words
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. (Proverbs 18:21 NKJV)
There’s an old Saturday night live sketch starring Al Franken as a character named Stuart Smalley, the fictional host of a mock self-help show. Each show, he would look into his mirror of affirmation and tell himself “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough and doggone it people like me.” Even though the sketch was obviously meant to be funny (and it was), I can’t help but think that maybe Stuart was onto something.
If we are going to have “one voice” what should that voice be saying? I don’t know about you, but I would like mine to be in line with the Word of God. If words have power, I want the life-giving ones working for me. I believe the most influential person in your life is yourself. As the saying goes, “as a man (or woman) thinks, so is he (she)”. What do you think and say about yourself? After the birth of my fourth child, being severely sleep deprived, I caught myself regularly saying “ugh, my brain isn’t working.” After hearing myself say that several times a day over a period of time, I think I actually started to believe it! The Lord convicted me of my harmful words and now I try to be more diligent about what I say and think regarding myself and others. Maybe you should too.
What wrong words have you been saying about yourself lately? How do they line up with the truth of what God says about you?
